Modeling the Ocean: The Conservation and Science of Marine Aquariums
Did you miss the Modeling the Ocean lecture on Nov. 28th?
Watch "Modeling the Ocean: The Conservation and Science of Marine Aquariums" with Andrew Sandler, founder and CEO, Polo Reef.
Don't miss an evening with Andrew Sandler, founder and CEO of Polo Reef.
Join Andrew Sandler, founder and CEO of Polo Reef, on a journey through some of the most visionary, complex, and expansive privately operated marine aquaria. Sandler and his team at Polo Reef in New York are recreating the ocean to provide the natural conditions found throughout the world’s tropics. The diverse, exotic coral and unique reef fish found in the aquaria at Polo Reef, including the 17,000 gallon tank in the home of Andrew Sandler, are key to the organization's efforts in supporting species preservation and restoration. Sandler and his team are renowned for their work in the aquarium and reef keeping community; from skillfully quarantining and treating new fish before introduction into the closed marine environment, to pioneering medical treatment methods for corals, and educating the public and fellow reef keepers. As ocean environments around the world become more acidic and coral reefs become increasingly threatened, the efforts undertaken by Sandler and Polo Reef become ever more important in the preservation of vast numbers of coral and rare fish species. The Polo Reef team is developing novel fish and coral care techniques, detailing their expert system operations as well as documenting the maturation of their coral and fish species over time – a process that is rarely shared by public aquariums. Educating the public about the ocean and aquariums, pioneering technologies for reef keeping and conservation, and supporting research and educational charities is at the core of Sandler's and Polo Reef’s mission.

About Andrew Sandler, Founder and CEO of Polo Reef
Outside of several local businesses, Andrew is currently collaborating with and on the board of various charities in order to give back to the hobby. Andrew has a very busy schedule between his business and family, but his passion for the reefing hobby is unmatched. He has worked with his team to develop a thorough fish and coral quarantine process that many reefers are intrigued to learn more about. Andrew and the team would not be complete without the assistance of his beautiful wife Aurily. She helps to keep Andrew focused, and makes sure that all of the projects blend with the rest of the house. Her keen eye for detail ensures that each tank matches with the design of the house and that nothing gets out of control. She also has the unenviable task of keeping Andrew and everyone else from losing focus, which she always manages with grace and has developed a skill for doing so very diplomatically.

Close your eyes for a moment or two and try to conjure up a vision of the marine aquarium of your dreams. Chances are it’s in the 500 to 1,000-gallon (1,900 to 3,800-L) range—a fantasy that doesn’t come close to the reality of a reef tank I encountered recently in the town of Old Westbury, New York.
