FAU Receives $1 Million Gift for AI Lab

The Rubin and Cindy Gruber Sandbox will house the  Charles E. Schmidt College of Science’s Machine Perception and Cognitive Robotics Lab (MPCR) within the  S.E. Wimberly Library  at FAU’s Boca Raton campus. The gift will support renovating a 3,400-square-foot resource center designed to cater to students from across the University. Meet Astro, FAU's Smart RoboDog!

Using deep learning and artificial intelligence (AI), scientists from  Florida Atlantic University ’s Machine Perception and Cognitive Robotics Laboratory ( MPCR ) in the  Center for Complex Systems and Brain Sciences  at FAU’s  Charles E. Schmidt College of Science  are bringing to life one of about a handful of these quadruped robots in the world. Astro is unique because he is the only one of these robots with a head, 3D printed to resemble a Doberman pinscher, that contains a (computerized) brain. Read more.

Florida's First NSF-Funded AI and Deep Learning Lab

Florida Atlantic University ’s  College of Engineering and Computer Science , in collaboration with researchers from FAU’s  Schmidt College of Medicine  and FAU’s  Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute , one of the university's four research pillars, has received a $652,820 grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to establish the first NSF-funded Major Research Instrumentation (MRI) Artificial Intelligence and Deep Learning (AIDL) Training and Research Laboratory in Florida. Technology Senses Parkinson's Patients' Medication Response

Researchers from Florida Atlantic University ’s  College of Engineering and Computer Science  have developed an innovative way to automatically and reliably detect and monitor medication ON and OFF states in PD patients. They have combined an algorithm and sensor-based system that detects ON and OFF state patterns in PD patients using two wearable motion sensors placed on the patient’s most affected wrist and ankle. New Indexes Evaluate College Football Kickers and Punters

The FAU Kicker Index  (business.svdxn96.com/kicker) and the  FAU Punter Index  (business.svdxn96.com/punter) will rank kickers and punters of Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) teams throughout the season. Algorithm Steers Catheters to Target for Treating Atrial Fibrillation

Researchers from Florida Atlantic University ’s  College of Engineering and Computer Science  and collaborators have developed the first algorithm that can locate patient-specific ablation targets within the atria that does not require specialized catheters or 3D electro-anatomic maps of the heart. The new algorithm – the iterative catheter navigation (ICAN) – is fundamentally different from existing approaches. Read more.
